The Women in Ghana

Pernille Bülow is a businesswoman, but also a mother. In Africa, she met women who were mothers as well, but had no opportunity of becoming businesswomen until they became part of the fair-trade project. From the outset, it has been important to teach the women to stand on their own feet: they are given the opportunity to do so by, creating their own small business.

When Pernille met the women they could already make beads, but none of them knew how to use the beads to make jewellery. After receiving Danida's support, Pernille travelled to Africa with four female instructors, 20 design manuals and 20 toolboxes in hand.
These toolboxes have become the basis for the women's independence. At the first workshop they produced so much jewellery that they could pay their toolboxes and now they own them - that was the start of their businesses.
The project is a success, because women get the knowledge and opportunity to improve their future themselves. "We do not come and give them a bag of money. They earn that themselves, and that makes an incredible difference, both for them and for us."

Pernille Bülow has been approved and registered as an associate member of Fair Trade Danmark.
